Vertex Mining
Africa is a major producer of many key mineral commodities, with bountiful reserves of metals and minerals such as gold, diamond, cobalt, bauxite, iron ore coal, and copper across the continent. Some of the major mining countries in Africa are Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Large mining operations in Africa have generated big profits for foreign companies, with little local benefit. Now governments are trying to harness more mining revenues for development purposes. Mineral-rich countries in Africa enjoyed a mining boom between 2002 and 2007 as metal and oil prices nearly tripled.
Property & Construction
Investment returns from real estate in Africa's rapidly expanding economies significantly exceed those achievable in almost all developed markets. Forecasts of 20% net annual returns from investing in shopping malls, office blocks or industrial complexes in countries across Africa continue to draw in new investors. Huge shortfalls in residential property across the continent give rise to opportunities for private development on a grand scale, while a lack of local funding for infrastructure projects provides a platform for new private partnerships with the public sector.
Energy & Fuel
Africa is rich in renewable energy sources, including hydro, sun, wind and others. The time is right for sound planning to ensure the right energy mix. Decisions made today will shape the continent's energy sector for decades. Energy use and development in Africa varies widely across the continent, with some African countries exporting energy to neighbors on the global market while others lack even basic infrastructures or systems to acquire energy.
Information Technology
Information Technology
The rapid spread of the internet across the African continent has been heralded as a key driver of prosperity and a sign of the continent’s technological coming of age. Today, at least a quarter of the population has internet access, a nearly fifty-fold increase in internet usage since the turn of the millennium. Technology has transcended poverty, race and economic conditions to becoming a driving force in the lives of people across the world. New technologies bypass poor roads, unreliable energy, and political instability (Moran, Abramson & Moran, 2014). In economics, it is widely accepted that technology is the key driver of economic growth of countries, regions and cities.
Telecommunication
Telecommunications is becoming an essential infrastructure in the global economy. The electronic flow of information around the world favours those nations that have invested in the technology to participate in this international commerce. Special attention is paid to telecommunications as a link in the chain of the regional development process.
